Fun Things We Did in Bangkok with Kids (Thailand)

Bangkok Kids 3-min

Bangkok! We had a family trip last December and it was my kids’ first time. Here are some of our favorite things from our visit.

Disclaimer: Right off the bat, I need to give you a heads up; when I say “with kids” I don’t mean we had a kid-centric trip. In fact, aside from the occassional Disneyland visits or playgrounds, we don’t really arrange our trip itineraries according to the kids. They follow what we want to visit (be it museums, historical sites or even shopping). So if you’re looking for suggestions like kiddie play areas or theme parks, sorry there are none on this list. :(

Here are the top 5 things we all enjoyed during our last Bangkok trip!

1. Take a day trip to Ayutthaya

A UNESCO Heritage site that the kids surprisingly really enjoyed! My eldest even exclaimed “I just realized that I love ruins. Maybe when I’m older, I will explore more ruins!”

It was hot because we were under the sun the entire time (umbrellas can be borrowed) but that never seemed to bother my kids because they just enjoyed running around and exploring the different sections. Maybe they felt like Indiana Jones (though I’m sure they have no clue who that is!)

2. Shop for snacks and Trinkets Sook Siam at IconSiam

I am not much into shopping for clothes but shopping for souvenirs and snacks, I’m in! If you’re looking for a chill place with a more luxurious vibe (as in, inside a mall,) we recommend Sook Siam at IconSiam. The design is cute and lots of interesting local shops.

The dining area at IconSiam is beautiful too; complete with water features mimicking Thailand’s famous floating markets.

3. Tour the Jim Thompson House Museum

Probably my personal favorite was visiting designer Jim Thompson’s home in Thailand. You are required to join a tour to explore and I highly recommend it. The history is interesting and the home is beautiful. Just warning if you’re going with kids, there’s mention of a disappearance and this detail gave both my kids a little anxiety.

4. Louis Vuitton Visionary Journeys

Ok, you might be surprised that I’m including this but this is because my kids enjoyed the projections of Yayoi Kusama’s pumpkins (we studied her for artist study) and there’s a freebie area in the end. Haha. They boys got stickers and postcards for free which they loved and used for their travel journals!

The exhibit is free!

5. Go Restaurant Hopping (Michelin style)

Bangkok Kids 4-min

There are so many restaurants in Bangkok that have gained Michelin recognition (whether it’s a star or a Bib Gourmand pick) and a lot of them are affordable as well.

One of our favorites was Saneh Jaan which is a one Michelin star.

6. Dine in a Royal Thai Navy Ship at Sirimahannop

Bangkok Kids 2-min

Docked at the Asiatique Riverfront, the Sirimahannop transports you to “an enchanting bygone era of Thai heritage.” Of course, having dinner in a ship was an adventure in itself and the kids had a blast exploring. The food was great and the ambience was beautiful. Make sure you book on the outdoor deck, a little before sunset so you get the best views.
