They say kids learn best when they’re having fun. With Science, there are many different ways to achieve this: through experiments, crafts and my personal favorite, reading good books.
So for this post, I’ve rounded up some of our favorite Science book sets and series for kids. Enjoy learning with your children about the amazing world that God created!
Let’s Read and Find Out Science
What is it: The Let’s Read and Find Out Science Books are designed “to educate preschoolers and young elementary school students about basic science concepts.” These are non-fiction books and have been in publication for decades (some titles have been reillustrated and reissued)
What I love about it:
- Very easy to understand for kids but words and concepts are not dumbed down
- Wide variety of topics, not just the usual favorites (i.e. Human Body, Space and Animals)
- Goes into specifics (i.e. Teeth, Night Animals, Bubbles, Clouds, etc.) and in great detail
Where to buy: I got the whole set of Level 1, which contains 32 books, from Bookery for Kids and Mums. It’s an online store that sells a lot of book sets that are wonderfully curated, at a cheaper cost. Here’s a link to the exact listing at their online store.
The Magic School Bus
What is it: A fictional series about a teacher, Ms. Frizzle, who owns a Magic School Bus and takes her class on one of a kind, out of this world field trips!
What I love about it:
- It’s the perfect combination of fun and science: fun stories, fun characters and a lot of science!
- Always a hit with the kids
- A personal childhood favorite: I used to devour this series (both books and the TV show!) as a kid and I’m so glad I get to pass on this love to my sons. I honestly loved this series so much myself that whenever my aunt from the U.S. would ask what she could get for me, I’d always request for Magic School Bus books!
Where to buy: I have my own copies from when I was little and I passed it on to my kids (Yay!) BUT I also recently purchased an entire set from Bookery for Kids and Mums so I can complete my missing titles. Hehe. Here’s the listing at their online store.
Cat in the Hat Reading Library
What is it: A series of books that follow the adventures of Dick, Sally and the Cat in the Hat as they explore and cover various topics: from mammals to outer space. As you’d expect from Dr. Seuss books, the books are in rhyme format. Note that these books are not written by the original Dr. Seuss though.
What I love about it: I love the variety of topics that the books cover. I am honestly not a HUGE fan of the rhymes but my son loves it. And if that makes him wanna learn more about the subject matter then I say, go for it! 😉 Hehe.
Where to buy: Got my copies from various shops. Bookery for Kids and Mums also sells this as a complete set.
Usborne’s See Inside / Look Inside Books
What is it: These are Usborne’s series of non-fiction books that are full of fun flaps to lift, revealing a ton of interesting facts.
What I love about it: I have always been a fan of Usborne books. They have many high quality educational non-fiction books that are beautifully illustrated.
Our See Inside and Look Inside books in particular are some of our favorites because it engages the kids on the topic thoroughly. There’s always a novelty to lift-the-flap type of books and it keeps the kids entertained as they learn. The books are also printed on thick, hard paper, which are perfect for little hands.
Where to buy: I get my Usborne books from the shop Rooke and Reese. They sell a lot of Usborne’s best selling books and a host of other educational materials. I love their selection.
Julia Rothman Collection: Farm, Food, Nature Anatomy
What is it: A set of whimsical, educational books that are full of fun information and beautifully drawn artworks. Know the different parts of animals, how life is like in farms, learn different ways of tying a knot and more.
What I love about it: So many interesting tidbits that you probably haven’t read in any other book before. Great not just for kids but even for adults! In fact, I may have bought this set for myself and not really for the kids. Haha! Just kidding… sort of!
Where to buy: Got most of my titles from secondhand bookshops but these books are easily available on Amazon.
You Wouldn’t Want to Live Without…
What is it: A series of books that explore what life would be like without certain natural phenomena, technological innovations and more!
What I love about it: It’s funny and witty both in the way that the books are written and illustrated. This series also has a counterpart for history, which is probably my all-time favorite. Will review them next time.
Where to buy: Been purchasing these books on Amazon since I was in high school (would you believe it? Haha!) But they don’t come in cheap when purchased individually. So, I recently got a set of 30 books from Bookery for Kids and Mums. The 30 book set is a combination of the series’ best-selling science and history books.
